Honda Civic Hybrid sedan review

Having many tough competitors in the global market Honda Civic Hybrid does make a stand for itself. Closest in competition with Toyota Prius, Civic Hybrid too has got a lot to offer. In its segment of car, this sedan is also considered to be a strong contender.

The Civic Hybrid as of now is not available in India. The new careful changes are welcomed by many but it is still a big question whether this sedan is going to win more hearts than it did before with the new developments, still remains to be answered. Engine and technical specifications

Powered by a 1.5 litres, 1497 cc single overhead cam, inline 4 cylinders, 8 valves hybrid engine, the Civic Hybrid develops a combined maximum power by electric motor and engine of 110 hp at 5500 rpm and peak torque of 127 lb-ft at 1000-3500 rpm. The compression ratio of the engine is 10:8:1. There is a multi-point fuel injection system drive by wire throttle system, front wheel drive system and eco assist system installed in this sedan. There is a standard Lithium Ion battery with 20 kW output, 144 voltage, 16 litres volume and 48.5 lbs battery installed in the Civic Hybrid.

The maximum power developed by this electric motor is 23 hp at 1546-3000 rpm and peak torque comes to 78 lb-ft at 500-1546 rpm. The voltage range varies between 108 V – 172 V. There are power assisted ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. 15 inch light weight alloy wheels are given in the car. The total wheelbase of the car is 105.1 inches. The kerb weight of the Civic Hybrid is 2853 lbs. This sedan measures 177.3 inches in length, 56.3 inches in height and 69.0 inches in width.

Exterior design

The designing and styling of the Honda Civic Hybrid has been done beautifully. The roof mounted antenna gives the car a stylish look. The outside rear view mirrors are heated, power assisted and body coloured. The body coloured bumpers are impact absorbing and the door handles too are body coloured in all variants. Variable intermittent windshield wipers and rear deck lid spoiler are standard in all variants.

The design of the multi-reflector halogen headlights with auto on/off looks fabulous with blue accents. The LED taillights are responsible for giving the rear its stunning look. The grille has got subtle changes done to it which makes the front more appealing than before. Honda Civic Hybrid is available in some elegant shades. They are cool mist metallic, crystal black pearl, green opal metallic, polished metal metallic and taffeta white. With such elegant colours all you must expect is a lot of luxury on the exterior.


The interiors of the Honda Civic Hybrid are beautiful and are done up in two colours grey and stone depending on the variant you choose. There is an option of choosing between cloth upholstery and the leather upholstery, both being pretty attractive.

The EPA estimated fuel efficiency of Honda Civic Hybrid is 44 mpg on the highways and 43 mpg in the city. The handling of the car is more responsive now, thanks to its enhanced rigidity. It takes 10.1 seconds to reach from 0-60 mph with full charged battery. The fuel and electric motor together do a satisfactory job, not the smoothest though.

The safety features included in the Civic Hybrid are front 3 point seat belts with automatic tensioning system, dual stage multiple threshold front SRS airbags for driver and co-passenger, side curtain airbags, advanced compatibility engineering body structure, traction control, brake assist, vehicle stability assist, ABS, EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights, side door impact beams, lower anchors and tethers for children, emergency trunk release, child proof rear door locks.
