Honda Pilot 2017 Review-Silent and spacious cabin but transmission has issues

The 2017 Honda Pilot is an expensive and comfortable mid-size SUV which offers high quality interior, active safety features and roomy cabin. The SUV is available in five trims -  LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard and all-wheel drive (AWD) is available.

The main highlight of the 2017 Honda Pilot is, its top trims now come standard with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While, other standard features of the SUV include Bluetooth, a seven-speaker audio system, push – button start, multi – angle rearview camera and USB port.

The starting MSRP of this eight-passenger SUV is $30,595, while its top model Elite, which gets all wheel drive (AWD) comes with an MSRP of $47,070. The SUV returns fuel economy of  27 MPG on the highway and 19 MPG in the city.

The main competitors of the 2017 Honda Pilot are Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander, Dodge Durango, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder.

The 2017 Honda Pilot is powered by a 3.5L, 3471 cc, 24-Valve SOHC i-VTEC Aluminum – Alloy V-6 engine that produces 280 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 262 lb-ft of torque @ 4700 rpm. And, it is paired with a 6-Speed Automatic Transmission (6AT), whereas the top models Touring and Elite are linked to a 9-Speed Automatic Transmission (9AT) with Shift-By-Wire (SBW) with Paddle Shifters.

The 2017 Honda Pilot has 39.4 ft of turning diameter. It has towing capacity of 3500 lbs, while with the AWD, it has 5000 lbs of towing capacity. Besides, the SUV has a fuel tank capacity of 19.5 gal.



The exterior design of the 2017 Honda Pilot is both refined and sporty. It comes with a ruggedly aggressive grille, which features a three-bar chrome layout. Other exterior features of the SUV include Smart Entry, Fog Lights, Integrated Glass Antenna, LED Brake Lights, Rear Privacy Glass, Variable Intermittent Windshield Wipers, One-Touch Turn Indicators, 18-in Alloy Wheels, Intermittent Rear Window Wiper and Washer.

In terms of dimension, the SUV measures 194.5 inches in length, 69.8 inches in height and 78.6 inches in width, at the same time it has a wheelbase of 111.0 inches and a ground clearance of  7.3 inches.

The 2017 Honda Pilot comes with a high-quality interior. As for seating configuration, the SUV has eight-passenger seating capacity in three rows, while its top trim Elite features 2nd-row captain’s chairs, which reduce seating capacity to seven-passenger. Besides, it has Blind Spot Information System (BSI) with Cross Traffic Monitor. Seats of the car are well cushioned and comfortable.

in terms of comfort and convenience, the 2017 Honda Pilot comes loaded with touch screen infotainment system, cruise control, tri-zone automatic climate control and 8-in display audio touch screen and a rear entertainment system, Bluetooth, two auxiliary jacks for headphones, five USB ports for charging tablets and mobile devices, 12-volt outlets, a 115-volt outlet and an HDMI port. At the same time, the higher trims feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moreover, the SUV has 109 cu. ft. of cargo volume with 2nd – and 3rd – row seats are folded down. 


The main advantage of the 2017 Honda Pilot is its roomy interior with spacious and comfortable seats. Cabin is quite and third-row seat is also good and even adults can sit comfortably. Furthermore, the SUV has better fuel economy than rivals.


One of the major drawbacks of the SUV is its complicated climate and audio controls. The SUV does not have electronic parking brake. Besides, with nine-speed transmission, the 2017 Honda Pilot lacks refinement.

The 2017 Honda Pilot is an excellent performer. The SUV achieves the 0 – 60 mph mark in just 6.5 seconds. Ride quality is good and handling is pleasing. 

In terms of safety, the SUV comes equipped with a number of standard features like ABS brakes, front, side and curtain airbags, multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, road departure mitigation, lane keep assist and brake assist, while optional features of the SUV include Honda Sensing package that features forward collision mitigation and adaptive cruise control.


No doubt, with luxurious interior, comfortable and spacious seating and good cargo volume, the 2017 Honda Pilot is a decent family SUV.
